Safety Checked are delighted to announce that they are sponsoring local rider Izzy De Santis in her MIND Challenge.
Izzy De Santis hopes to raise £25,000 for mental health charity MIND by joining a group of international riders in August of 2022 on the world’s longest and most gruelling horse race.
Izzy’s passion has always been horses – riding and owning a horse through childhood, she has worked in racing yards, helped to school challenging horses and, more recently, has qualified as an equine veterinary nurse. She has chosen to support MIND because of her personal experience with mental illness. Her mental health has taken her on untrodden and sometimes dangerous paths (attempts at suicide, self harming, frequent detainment in hospital and therapeutic care, etc), but has ultimately led her to to a much safer place through adventure and being able to leave her comfort zone. This has been her pathway to recovery.
Safety Checked are proud to be supporting Izzy and MIND ‘s Blue Light Programme, which provides help and support to those in the Emergency Services. It has been a tough year for many, given the impact of the global pandemic and the restrictions to our daily lives. Mental Health awareness is an important part of employee and employer relations, and it was for this reason that the management and staff of Safety Checked decided to support Izzy and make MIND their Charity of The Year for 2020-2021.

The course recreates the horse messenger system developed by Genghis Khan in 1224. Each rider plays the role of the messengers, on semi-wild horses, through 1000km of the Mongolian Steppe. The exact course changes every year, and is kept secret until shortly before the race begins. The terrain will invariably include mountain passes, green open valleys, rolling hills, wetland and floodplains, desert, and of course open steppe. Changing steeds every 40km, the riders navigate and survive using their wits and skill, over a period of 14 days, all the while living among the herders and their families. Every year Safety Checked make a commitment to support local and worthy causes. As part of our commitment to adding social value we have support a runner in the Great North Run (Fight for Sight and RNIB), Lanchester Cricket Club, 19th Durham Scout Group, and donated vibrating pillow alarms to Camphill Village Trust. We are looking forward to providing updates and support for Izzy and MIND from now until crossing the finish line!
