On the 1st September BS5839-1:2017 was released, with revised recommendations including cutting false alarms.
Reducing false alarms
One of the key points is regarding Manual Call Point (MCP) covers. MCP covers were only required where a risk assessment deemed them necessary to prevent false alarms from accidental operation. However the latest revision to BS5839-1 recommends that call point covers be fitted to ALL newly installed MCP’s in an attempt to reduce unwanted or accidental alarm activations.
If the risk assessment has previously dictated that they are not required then retrofitting is not needed.
Here at Safety Checked we would recommend that you review your false alarms and your fire risk assessment regularly, and consider retrofitting covers to call points as a means of cutting false alarms if required.
